A piece of soap

Ten years ago, at the very last day of our stay in South Africa then before flying back home, we were mugged in downtown Johannesburg. Because money and driving licence was stolen we had to visit the nearest police station at John Vorster Square to have a report made.
The same police station where in 1971 on the sidewalk freedom fighter Ahmed Timol was found dead. So called by jumping from a window of one of the higher floors. The stories by the officials varied so much that it was obvious that mr Timol was pushed out. Here a poem on the distressing situation written by Chris van Wijk displayed in the Steve Biko memorial in township Kasi.
